Dada revisited

I hope you enjoyed and understood the previous pieces of Dada art work I chose from some of the most important artists of the Dada movement. The Dada movement was short-lived and many of the artist started getting bored, but it is a very very important movement because it was the first movement to actually say fuck you to the art worldand to the government. Unlike the other modern movements before Dada, Dada was the first to be tasteless, it didn't care if it was attractive to the eye. I'm going to move forward from Dada and take a look at other art movements and artist with the same ideas as Dadaism.

Dada: Marcel Duchamp

Bicycle Wheel 1913-64
                                                     Nude Descending a Staircase 1912

Foutain 1917
L.H.O.O.Q. 1919

Duchamp is one of the most important artists of the 20th century. Duchamps most famous piece is a ready-made the fountain, the idea of this piece is rather that peeing on art you would be peeing on yourself. This piece is important because it raises so many questions at once about art for the first time. Is it art because its signed and is in a gallery? If this isn't art what isn't? Where do notions of "art" begin and end?

Dada artist Jean (Hans) Arp

Collage with Squares Arranged According to the Laws of Chance 1916-17

Relief, Clock 1914

Man, Mustache, Navel

Geometric Forms 1914

Who is Jean (Hans) Arp? Why is he important to Dada? Jean Arp is one of the founding members of Dada. His work usually conststs of chance-derived compositions. Why chance-derived? One day when Jean Arp was painting he became so frustrated that he tore his work into pieces and threw it on the floor. He noticed the pattern the pieces formed and was amazed. It was a pattern that was more expressive than his controlled creation. He was so moved by this expression that he pasted down the paper scraps and shreds in the manner that chance had determined. Chance inspired and influenced the Dada movement.

What is Dada?

Many of us find ourselves or others asking "what is Dada?" Is it art? Is it an idea? Is it a style? At the time Dada wasn't art or a style, it was a world view. Dada was basically saying "Fuck you" to the art world and academia. Dada concentrated on anti-war, anti-politics, and anti-bourgeois, they rejected traditional standards and ideas of art. Art isn't just for the rich, and art shouldn't serve as pretty decoration.
