Who is Jean (Hans) Arp? Why is he important to Dada? Jean Arp is one of the founding members of Dada. His work usually conststs of chance-derived compositions. Why chance-derived? One day when Jean Arp was painting he became so frustrated that he tore his work into pieces and threw it on the floor. He noticed the pattern the pieces formed and was amazed. It was a pattern that was more expressive than his controlled creation. He was so moved by this expression that he pasted down the paper scraps and shreds in the manner that chance had determined. Chance inspired and influenced the Dada movement.
